Tuscan Terracotta

Tuscan terracotta is one of the oldest and most appreciated paving materials in Italian architecture, with over 1000 years of history.

Origin and Tradition

Tuscan terracotta is produced in the area of Impruneta, near Florence, where the local clay is uniquely rich in iron and limestone. This combination gives the fired tiles their characteristic warm tones โ€” from honey yellow to deep red โ€” and exceptional resistance to thermal excursions, frost and time.

The technique is largely unchanged: clay is shaped (by hand or mechanically), dried for weeks, then fired at temperatures around 950โ€“1000ยฐC in traditional kilns. Each tile carries small imperfections that make it unique.

Types of Tuscan Terracotta

Handmade Terracotta

Handmade terracotta retains all the irregularities of artisan production: slightly variable thicknesses, organic edges, surface texture rich in tonal variations. Ideal for rural, historic or rustic-style settings.

Brushed Terracotta (Nobile Arrotato)

Brushed terracotta is mechanically polished to obtain a more regular surface, while preserving the warmth and chromatic richness of natural terracotta. It is an excellent compromise between rustic charm and contemporary cleanliness.

Glazed Terracotta

The glazed version receives a transparent surface coating that protects against stains and reduces porosity, making maintenance easier especially in kitchens and bathrooms.

Technical Performance

Where Tuscan Terracotta Lives

Indoors, terracotta brings warmth and character: kitchens, living areas, entrances, fireplace surrounds. Outdoors it is the historic choice for terraces, courtyards, garden paths, covered porches. It pairs beautifully with stone, exposed wood beams and traditional plaster finishes.

Maintenance

Untreated terracotta requires initial impregnation with linseed oil or specific treatments to seal the surface and prevent stain absorption. Glazed terracotta requires no treatment. Daily cleaning is done with neutral detergents โ€” avoid aggressive products that may damage the protective film.
