Glass Mosaic

Glass mosaic is one of the most ancient and refined wall and floor coverings, with a tradition that stretches back to Ancient Rome and Byzantium.

A Tradition of Light and Colour

The glass mosaic is born from the assembly of small vitrified enamel tesserae — small squares of fired glass paste — that together create surfaces of extraordinary luminosity and chromatic depth. Unlike ceramic, the glass mosaic captures and reflects light, generating an almost three-dimensional effect that changes throughout the day.

Emaux de Briare: French Excellence

The Emaux de Briare tesserae are the historic reference for premium glass mosaic. Founded in Briare, France in 1851, the manufacture has produced uninterruptedly for over 170 years, supplying important works around the world — from the Sacré-Cœur in Paris to private swimming pools by the world's leading architects.

Each tessera is produced from a recipe that includes silica, sodium and metallic oxides for colouring; the firing exceeds 1000°C and produces a vitrified material of extraordinary chromatic stability and resistance.

The Harmonies Series

The Harmonies series proposes over 50 colours organised in chromatic families: blues for swimming pools and seaside (Bahamas, Caraibes, Galapagos), warm tones for Mediterranean baths (Camelia, Pivoine), greens inspired by tropical waters (Fidji, Californie), neutrals for contemporary projects (Pierre, Cristaux), up to the precious gold series (Or) made with real 24-carat gold leaf.

Where to Use Glass Mosaic

Swimming Pools and Spas

The historical and natural use: vitrified enamel is virtually inalterable in contact with chlorinated water and salts, while the chromatic richness creates the typical "tropical lagoon" effect of luxury swimming pools.

Bathrooms and Wellness Areas

For shower walls, bathtubs, washbasins: glass mosaic introduces a unique luminosity and tactility, very different from large-format tile.

Decorative Walls

Mosaic medallions, contemporary murals, kitchen backsplashes: the small dimension of the tesserae allows the realisation of personalised decorations and gradients of great visual impact.

Other Types of Mosaic

Porcelain Stoneware Mosaic

More affordable, available in 30x30 cm sheets pre-mounted on mesh. Recommended for floors and high-traffic environments where the technical resistance of porcelain stoneware is needed.

Ceramic Mosaic

The most economical option, suitable for indoor decorative wall coverings.

Installation Notes

The glass mosaic requires specific adhesives (such as Mapei Adesilex P10) and competent technicians for installation. Joints are filled with epoxy or fine grout in a colour matching the tesserae. The choice of joint colour can dramatically influence the final result — light grout enhances each tessera, dark grout creates a more uniform "mirror" effect.
