What Is WPC
WPC stands for Wood Plastic Composite. The core is PVC foamed and loaded with wood flour, which makes it thicker (5–8 mm) and slightly compressible — very different from the rigid slab of an SPC.
Above the core the construction is the same as other vinyls: a printed decorative layer and a transparent wear layer. The difference is all underneath, and you feel it walking: WPC gives a cushioned step, without the dry sound typical of rigid floors laid floating.
Comfort
The foamed core works like a built-in underlay. It walks softer, attenuates impact noise towards the floors below and feels warmer barefoot, because foamed material conducts cold less readily.
This is why WPC often goes in bedrooms and sleeping areas, or in flats where noise towards the neighbour is a concern. Many collections come with the acoustic underlay already bonded at the factory, which besides simplifying installation guarantees a constant thickness.
The trade-off is load-bearing: under very high concentrated loads — a full bookcase, a piano — a foamed core yields slightly more than a mineral one. Nothing dramatic in a home, but for a shop with heavy shelving the correct choice is SPC.
WPC, SPC and LVT
The three acronyms describe three different souls under a similar surface. WPC is the most comfortable and the quietest: the domestic choice.
SPC, with its stone-loaded core, is rigid and very stable: it takes the heat of a south-facing window without expanding, forgives screed imperfections and carries greater loads. It is the choice for commercial premises and very sunny rooms.
LVT glue-down is the thinnest and most stable of all, but it wants a perfectly skimmed substrate. It is the choice when the available thickness is minimal — for example in a renovation where the doors cannot be altered.
Installation
WPC is laid floating with a click joint, and it is among the fastest installations there is: no adhesive, no waiting, walkable immediately. The thicker, more rigid core bridges small substrate irregularities that would defeat a thin LVT.
Two rules are not negotiable. The perimeter joint of 8–10 mm along every wall, because a floating floor must be able to move; and the maximum continuous area stated by the manufacturer, beyond which an expansion joint is required. Ignoring it is the most common cause of floors that "lift".
WPC is compatible with underfloor heating, but it is worth checking the total thermal resistance of the build-up — core plus underlay — because it is higher than that of a thin LVT and the heat arrives more slowly.
Maintenance
As with all vinyls: damp cloth, neutral detergent, no periodic treatment. No sanding, no oiling, no revarnishing.
The precautions are the same as for LVT — felt pads under furniture, a doormat at the entrance, soft castors on office chairs — plus one specific to WPC: beware of direct, prolonged heat. Behind an unshaded south-facing window a foamed core can expand more than a mineral one. In those positions, choose SPC.
How to install click WPC flooring
- Check the substrate. Verify flatness (2 mm over 2 m) and residual humidity. WPC forgives more than LVT, but not humps.
- Acclimatise the packs. Leave the boxes closed in the room for 24–48 hours before installation.
- Lay the substrate. Polyethylene vapour barrier, plus the underlay if it is not already bonded to the plank.
- Click the planks together. Lay the planks starting from the left, staggering the end joints and leaving an 8–10 mm perimeter joint on all sides.
- Respect the joints. Add an expansion joint beyond the maximum continuous area stated by the manufacturer and at every threshold.
